Practical Advice on Marriage and Vocations

Practical Advice on Marriage and Vocations

Marriage and motherhood are profound vocations, especially when approached through the lens of faith. As Catholic women, we are called to embrace the sacred task of building a home that not only nurtures our families but also reflects the love and grace of God. But what does this look like in the day-to-day? From the beautiful to the mundane, household management is a significant part of this journey. In this post, I want to share some practical insights I’ve gained in my early years of marriage and homemaking, in the hopes that it will inspire and encourage you in your own walk. So let’s get practical on the vocations of marriage and motherhood.

As a Catholic woman, wife, mama, and homemaker, the Lord has invited me into the grand adventure of creating a heavenly home in which to nurture souls. Practically speaking, though, what does that look like? Household management.

As you well know, there are so many moving parts to this vocation. Some are glamorous, some are mundane, but all are sacred.

In my three short years of marriage, I’m only just beginning to scratch the surface of household management. So far, I’m discovering that it helps me tremendously to do the hard work, planning, and decision-making ahead of time so that I can free myself up to be more present to my family in the everyday.

For example: One idea that my lovely neighbor (and our babysitter) shared with me is to compile four weeks' worth of vegan recipes (yes, our family is plant-based) and then pull the ingredients from those recipes to create one shopping list for each week. That makes four different shopping lists that we can cycle through each month. “Automating” our grocery lists will then enable our family to have a healthy variety in our diet while also saving tons of time each week since meal planning and shopping list making will already be done for us! (But of course, we can always change them up as often as we’d like.)

Wedding planning is a beautiful and important season! And how much more beautiful is preparing for and growing in our vocations as wives and mamas? Let this be a space of wisdom and mentorship from one Catholic woman to another.

At the heart of marriage and motherhood is a sacred duty to care for our families, not just spiritually but also practically. The small, everyday tasks—whether it's meal planning, organizing the home, or simply being present with loved ones—are all opportunities to serve and love. As we grow in these vocations, may we remember that even the most ordinary aspects of household management are moments of grace. Let’s continue to learn from one another, sharing tips and wisdom, as we walk this beautiful path together as wives, mamas, and women of faith.
